Identifying learner needs through initial and diagnostic assessment, learning styles, barriers to participation and differentiation strategies.

Writing SMART learning objectives, sequencing content, designing lesson plans and preparing differentiated resources.

Direct instruction, facilitated discussion, collaborative learning, demonstration, questioning techniques and practical activities.

Who should apply

No formal teaching qualification required to begin
Subject-area knowledge or expertise in the area you intend to teach
Access to a teaching environment for the micro-teaching component (arrangements can be made)
Level 2 English and Maths (or equivalent) recommended

Common questions

Can I teach in a college with this qualification?
Yes — the Level 3 AET is the minimum qualification to teach in further education, adult education and work-based learning in England.
Is it the same as a PGCE?
No — a PGCE with QTS is required for school teaching. This qualification fully qualifies you for FE, adult education and work-based training roles.
What is micro-teaching?
A short (minimum 15-minute) teaching session that you plan, deliver to a group of peers or real learners, and reflect on — observed and assessed by your tutor.
How do I progress after completing this award?
The natural next step is the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (CET), followed by the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET).
